18th century French Gothic Revival period chateau settle with double lift seat handcrafted of solid old growth French walnut by talented artisans in Lyon, circa 1760s. This intricately carved hall bench features six high relief hand carved panels on the back and six matching panels below the hinged box seats. The spindle crest rail is flanked by ball cap finials.
The vestibules or entry areas of French chateaux were typically ringed with heavily carved benches that were often covered in pillows or draped with tapestries or carpets. While ideal in an entryway or foyer, this stunning bench would also work well in a living room, study, library, kitchen, or mudroom where its versatility as a storage space and place to put on or take off shoes and boots would also be appreciated. In very good condition, the bench is heavy, sturdy, and ready for centuries more of enjoyment.
